General Statement of Duties:
Provides support to campus materials management program using material handling tools including cargo vans, power forklift, and manual delivery equipment to distribute packages, mail and other materials on a scheduled and unscheduled basis. Supports Shipping & Receiving, Mail Services, Copy Center and other areas, providing timely and accurate distribution of materials. Protects the assets of the university at all times by operating in a safe and efficient manner.
Hours: 8 am - 4:30 pm, Saturday & Sunday off

Duties and
Responsibilities:
Operates university cargo vans in a safe and effective manner to make deliveries and pickups to all departments on campus, and to off-site locations, as directed by supervisors, including Salem Post Office. Assures that vehicle is in good working condition before use, reports issues immediately to supervisor for corrective action.
Provides support to campus mail distribution system, including intercampus mail pickup and drop-off, when possible combining mail and shipping and receiving distribution to gain greatest efficiency for the university. May assist in sorting of mail, and assists in preparation of mail deliveries for campus locations. Supports the schedule for mail services, helping assure that mail for U.S. Postal processing arrives at SSU mail services in time to be processed for same-day mailings.
Loads, unloads and distributes materials to all campus buildings, uses good body mechanics, practical thinking and material handling equipment to protect assets being distributed, as well as facilities and people in the environment. The goal is zero losses during handling. Examples include resident student packages and mail, university and U.S. Postal Service mail, incoming and outgoing, and supplies for departments, including printed materials, office supplies, books, etc.
Maintains accurate delivery logs to support departmental follow up for distribution questions. Writes in a legible manner, prepares delivery logs as specified, assures that recipients sign for items they receive, and safeguards all logs.
Provides receiving and shipping services as needed in coordination with the Associate Director to assure that priority services are covered at all times. Observes safe material handling procedures in unloading and staging of received materials, checks bill of lading, packing slip or other delivery tickets to assure that asset is being delivered to proper place at proper time. Coordinates delivery of received items with departments. Assures that all assets received are secured at all times at loading dock area while awaiting distribution.
Delivers printed materials from Copy Center to customers, including Mail Services. Assures that print materials are protected during transport.
Makes deliveries and picks up mail at Salem Post Office as needed and arranged.
Maintains communication with supervisors while in the field, seeks support to achieve goals, reports exceptions to normal operations immediately, and communicates with customers in a professional and business-like manner at all times.

Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License
Qualifications Required at Hire:
Knowledge of appropriate driving and safety skills when operating a motor vehicle in a congested area with many pedestrians
Ability to: walk long distances; lift (up to 50 lbs.), carry loads; bend, stoop, climb stairs; work in outdoor weather conditions
Experience using material handling equipment with proper body mechanics to safeguard yourself and other employees, the delivery items, the facilities of the university
Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to make distribution decisions using names, numbers, codes, symbols
Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures relative to motor trucks
